Recap of Wednesday’s Distribution Drive with Brick City Peace Collective and Hello Fresh

Scouting and Scavenging was able to distribute over 2,100 individual toiletry kits containing soap, shampoo, body lotion, conditioner, toothpaste, and toothbrush to the city of Newark on Wednesday. We partnered with the Brick City Peace Collective and Hello Fresh during their weekly food relief program where they have now provided over 500,000 fresh meals to under-served residents in the city of Newark. Brick City Peace Collective is an initiative of the Mayor’s Office dedicated to de-escalating conflict before it turns violent, while Hello Fresh is the largest meal kit provider in the US.

Every Wednesday a group of Newark residents put together fresh meal kits for residents that can feed a family of 4 at the JFK Rec Center in the city. It is safe to say that all of our volunteers were blown away by the level of organization and commitment shown in the gym that day. Many even expressed a desire to come back again and bring their team. After the meals are created, a network of drivers then takes and distributes the meals throughout the city. This week, in addition to the food they received, residents of Newark also received these toiletry items inside their meal kits. Scouting and Scavenging was honored to partner on this great program and play a small part in easing the financial burden on the residents of Newark during these challenging times.

Would like to give special thanks to many people with the city of Newark for their help in organizing Wednesday’s event. From the Mayor’s Office: Mayor Ras Baraka, Chief of Staff Middy Baraka, Special Assistant to the Mayor Jennifer Kohl, Communications Director Sondra Roberts, and lead organizer of the Brick City Peace Collective Dawn Haynes, in addition to Al-Tariq Best, founder of the Newark HUBB Center. They are doing tremendous work in a city near and dear to my heart, where both my grandparents were raised and I interned during the summer of 2012.
